I can not confirm until Monday, but anyway here it is..
The wife was told that ANYONE that rides a bike on county or state roads had to have a drivers license that it was a federal law, kids included.. She was also told that it was not enforced.. Really !!
This may be true .. This past year I rode up on a State license check on my bike and was asked if I had a license ..
Around here it would be a good way to send our friends from South of the border back home.. |

The short answer is that is incorrect. Bicyclists do not have to have a driver’s license. Further, driver’s licenses are managed under state, not federal, laws.
The long answer is that the Georgia Bicycle Law Enforcement Pocket Guide on page 7 under “legal status of cyclist” says “a person operating a bicycle is not required to have a driver’s license [40-1-1-(15)]”.
I looked all through the Georgia Motor Code but could not find that specific wording. A check of the section referenced, 40-1-1-(15), only says “ ”Driver’s License” means any license to operate a motor vehicle issued under the laws of this state.”
The key is the difference between the term “vehicle” and “motor vehicle”
According to the code, "Vehicle" means every device in, upon, or by which any person or property is or may be transported or drawn upon a highway, excepting devices used exclusively upon stationary rails or tracks. (my note: this would include bicycles as well as cars, trucks, motorcycles, etc.)
Also according to the code, "Motor vehicle" means every vehicle which is self-propelled other than an electric personal assistive mobility device (EPAMD). (my note: this does not include bicycles as they are not self propelled – it requires a person to make it go, thus a bicycle is not a “motor vehicle” but is just a “vehicle”. As a result a driver’s license is not required, however bicycles are required to abide by the rules for all “vehicles” (stop at stop signs, keep right, etc)

I understand that our Native American friends are looking for a way to send their "friends from east of the ocean" back home, too... |

I like that! The land would be clean and the oceans honored. |

It is the Law that we are required to carry with us an official State issued ID. I carry my GA drivers license.
If an adult cyclists breaks the law, such as going through a stop sign, he/she should get a traffic ticket just like any other driver would. Also, if you get seriously injured - who are they going to call -

Can you link or quote this 'law' that requires carrying a 'official State issued ID'? |

I don't believe there is such a law. If you drive a motor vehicle you must have a valid driver's license. As far as I know, for anyone else you must truthfully identify yourself to a police officer if asked but you don't need to produce an ID. |

It is not illegal to not carry ID. There is no State or Federal requirement for US citizens to carry ID. There is a requirment for legal non-citizens to carry ID.
BTW, I never ride without driver's license, insurance card, and Road ID. This is for safety reasons more than anything else. |
