Hey, I am a beginning bicycle commuter. Can anyone make recommendations on commuting from East Atlanta/Eastland Heights area to Georgia State University. I am a faculty member there and want to start commuting the 5 mile route on a regular basis.

Thanks![/list]

You've got a few good choices. I've entered a route that I would try in bikely.com .

I've drawn the route using Edgewood to get under I-75/85, but you may find using Decatur to work out better. Either way, this will probably be the spot with the highest volume traffic.

What time would you be leaving? I wouldn't mind joining you one morning on the way in (as long as it isn't Wednesday or this coming Friday).

Corgiorgi, I just rode the route because I wasn't familiar with Eastland Rd over to Confederate Avenue/ I don't eat much red meat, but the grilled burger smell coming out of the Burger King and Chubby Decker both at the intersection of Confederate and Moreland got my attention in a primeval way icon_wink.gif.

Confederate is the long hill on this route, but coming up Bouldercrest/Flat Shoals wouldn't be much better.

Taking a look at Decatur, I remembered that this is like a race track in the morning. Edgewood is the way to go.

thanks Jettmarks! Not sure when I will be riding this week, but i will let you know. I have some work happening at my house and will have to work around that, so I am not sure i will ride at all this week. Next week for sure though- i teach on monday and wednesday, and would probably leave at about 8:30 or 9am.

That looks like a good route. My worksite is on edgewood ave (the sculpture studio at GSU) so that will likely be my route in. I am familiar with riding it and auburn ave from my days commuting from near the carter center (which was really nice - almost all freedom parkway trail. I will miss that.)
