I wont leave home without a BUFF, which is a strip of lycra/coolmax/fleece, sort of like a gaitor.

I agree. Partnered with a good pair of wool socks usually does the trick for me.

Ditto on the helmet cover, Goretex or otherwise.
Ditto on the wool socks.
Performance hooded long sleeve jersey.
Gore jacket.
