I traded my F150 "clunker" in for a Japanese hatchback with a MPG meter on the dash. As an experiment, I decided to forego my bicycle commute and treat myself to commuting in climate controlled, stereo ensconsed comfort.
Here's my report after seven days of spoiled luxury...
I average 14 MPH during my commute by car. (17mph by bike)
It takes 4 minutes longer to drive than to ride to work (not including showers)
My car gets 20.0 mpg with aggressive hypermiling.
Hypermiling (to me) means at or below the speed limit, coast downhills, the air conditioning stays off and the engine is off at redlights. So much for luxury.
Despite cutting calories I've gained 4 pounds in one week.
I'll be back on the bike next week. I'm looking forward to it. |

And to top it off, you still have a car payment. |
