Answer
·  Where do I log in?

You can log in either by the log in box on the upper left of the home page or by the 'mybikesbl' link on the top menu.

·  Why do I have to log in?

Well, you don't really. But here's just some of what you get when you do: access to the SBL Ride list with over 2000 rides per year; participation on our Forums; downloads; more FW content online and your own personal mybikesbl with a ride journal and more.

Your registration helps us tie all these things together so when you visit, all the different parts are connected- one log in does it all.

·  I've lost my password, now what?

Simply have a new one emailed to you. Click here for instructions.

·  It's not recognizing my user name/ password...

The best thing to do before giving up in frustration, is copying and pasting the password directly from the email we send into the text box on the web page. Sometimes, it's easy to confuse, for example, a lower case L (l), and upper case I (I) and the number one (1). Lower case Qs (q) and Gs (g) can also be misread.

If you are using your own password (having changed it in your my account section), UpPer and loWeR case are important for usernames, emails and passwords. When logging in, 'R' and 'r' are two different things to a server. If your password is 'HotBicycleDaddy', 'hotbicycledaddy' won't fly.

If you are still having trouble, contact the webmaster.

Commonly confused characters:
upper case i, lower case L, one: I,l,1
upper case o, zero: O, 0
lower case G, lower case q: g, q

If you are having trouble copying and pasting the password, try reading your mail with a "serif" font such as Times New Roman (Times on the Mac). The serifs (the little extensions on the letters such as on an upper case i) make it easier to distinguish the characters.

·  I hate my password, I hate logging in. Really, why do I have to?

Actually this isn't a "frequently asked question" but one that's popped up about 0.3% of the time so far but is still a legitimate question that may help others.

Think of it as the evolution from just hopping on a bike with your jeans and tennis shoes to putting on riding pants and clipping into your pedals with those shoes that 'just weren't made for walking'.

  1. You can change the password to anything you wish- visit the 'mybikesbl' section -> 'change info' and look towards the bottom of the page.
  2. You can have a cookie set by checking the "remember me" box, so you don't have to log in each time you visit the site.
  3. Being logged in allows you to access a lot of functions on the site beyond just viewing the site. It automatically coordinates things like your posting articles, comments, reviews, downloading maps, using the forums, creating a personal riding journal. The site becomes more than something just to look at. Now you can participate and add your thoughts, ideas and information.
  4. It gives the SBL and its officers an idea of who is using the site, how often and other statistics relevant to the cost and effort the SBL puts into building and maintaining the site. It also gives us an idea of whether putting up all this information to the general public is helping SBL membership or cannibalizing it.
  5. By registering, the SBL builds a database of those who elect to be contacted by email regarding upcoming SBL events, thereby promoting the SBL and increasing its membership.
  6. Other than 4) and 5) we don't do anything with the individual information from the web site.
  7. It will eventually tie directly into our membership database giving members more options on managing their information, the ability to renew memberships online and registering for rides like the Wilson 100.
  8. It helps protect the web site from abuse by visitors whose only intent is to post spam or attempt to mine email addresses for spam.

Yes, it is one extra step like clipping into a pedal but in the long run, we think it's worth it.

·  How do I change my password?

You can change the password to anything you wish- visit the 'mybikesbl' section -> 'change info' and look towards the bottom of the page.

·  I log in, it tells me to "hang tight" but the home page shows the log in again.

It may be that you are logged in. After the server gets your username and password, it redirects you back to the page you started at. Some browsers then display a "cached" (saved) copy of that page, ie one that still has the log in box. Just refresh/reload the page and all should be well.

·  I forgot my username. Help!

Just follow the "Lost password" routine. Enter your email (you can leave the username blank). The web site will send you an email with your username and the confirmation code. If you still remember your password, you can skip the rest of the process and use your existing password with your username. If you've forgotten your password, continue the process to get a new one. Again, if you prefer to change your password, you can do that later at my account -> change information.

·  The website is not sending me my login or new password. Why does it stink so badly?

Sometimes, our website does stink, but we are working hard to improve it. Sometimes, folks use bad email addresses when they sign up for a new account or have changed email addresses since they first registered and are having the password information sent to a now dead email box or one that's too full (over quota).

If you are trying to log in for the first time and not getting anything sent to you in a reasonable time, make sure that you used a real live email address. If you think that you may be requesting a new password and it's being sent to a now dead email box contact the webmaster.

Please check the "Dead Emails" Category in the forums, I try to note in specific section: Dead Emails which addresses are failing. Before you send me a vitriolic email, please double check that you are asking the website to send you info to a real, live, active and open email box. I'm always happy to help.

·  I entered by username and email and attempted to get a confirmation code but it tells me "Sorry, no corresponding user info was found".

I've encounterd this error myself and then realized I was putting the username in the email box and vice versa. Once I put the proper info in the correct boxes, all was well.
